Make up a spare bag with important papers, identification, clothes, keys, money and important phone numbers and keep it safe so you can take it quickly or keep it with a trusted friend.

If it is safe to do so, take important papers, or photocopies, including:

  • birth certificates for yourself and your children
  • marriage certificate
  • Centrelink documentation, including health care and pension cards
  • Medicare card
  • driver’s licence
  • credit cards
  • lease or mortgage papers
  • passports
  • tax file number
  • insurance information
  • school and medical records
  • immigration documents
  • legal/court documents, such as Family Court Orders or Restraining/Intervention Order
  • bank account cards and details, including account numbers and password to access telephone or internet banking
  • identification, including a recent photo, which may help others to protect you from the offender

You should also consider taking with you:

  • mobile phone and charger
  • clothing, toiletries and comfort items for you and your children, including their favourite toys
  • some money
  • an extra set of keys – for car, house or work
  • medications, prescriptions and medical equipment
  • photographs and other items of sentimental value such as jewellery
